Program: October 2011 Curator: Don't You Have Docs?

program

NOTE: Our regular 3rd Monday night screening at Loop has been replaced for this month only.

In October Don't You Have Docs? goes on an excursion to Cinema Nova in Carlton. This month's screening we will take place as part of the Generation Next Documentary Conference program (October 13 & 14 - see the below). This means there will be no screening at Loop Bar this coming Monday.

The conference is designed specifically for emerging Australian filmmakers and so we decided to make our October theme 'Australia' - and by that we mean absolutely nothing to do with Baz Luhrmann. What does that mean? Well basically we've programed short docs that are either by an Australian or about an Australian subject - that's it, simple.

Unfortunately with us presenting the program at the Generation Next conference this means that you needs to be a registered deligate in order to come to the screening (but it's super cheap). However for those who cannot make it we will, as ever, publish the short films on our Mubi garage channel. Some of these films are not yet up on mubi, but we hope to have the rest up there within the next week. So please check back then.

In the meantime we figured that we better let you know about the conference and make sure you don't turn up to Loop next week expecting us to be there. Its back to normal in Novmeber so we'll see at Loop Bar then - stay tuned

I Just Don’t Have Time to Call Mum dir Genevieve Bailey &Tim Foster

Springvale Stories dir Sarah Catherine Firth
This animated documentary was commissioned as part of my year long artist in residency in Springvale, Victoria Australia. The objective of my residency was to empower young primary school students from disadvantaged backgrounds (many of them recently arrived migrants and refugees) to share their stories and self expression. They talk about bullying, culture, belonging, identity, friendship, racism, religion and wii games.

The project began with holding comic drawing workshops where the children from three local schools created comic artworks about their lives. This lead onto the interviews which make up this animated film and all the outcomes from the project were exhibited in the Springvale Historical Society Gallery.

This project was supported by The Face to Face Project and The City of Greater Dandenong Council with Funding from Arts About Us and VicHealth.

A Light That Never Fades dir Jonathan Persson
Tells the story of an unsung hero; the lamp post. Presenting the history of this fascinating yet ordinary object in our lives, A Light That Never Fades is a quirky yet very touching work about something most of us have never stopped to think about.

A Light That Never Fades

Waterfrontcity dir Patrick Brucker
This experimental sound clip is inspired by Melbourne's artificial "Waterfront City" and its unique architecture. The purpose of the project was to only work with sounds recorded on location. These sounds composed the basic rhythm of each cut in the final product.

Facing Water Crisis Saltbush Country dir Balazs Gardi
Australians are used to the fact that the Great Outback is not more than barely-populated arid grassland and desert that has adapted to the climatic conditions. However nowadays climate change causes a major concern in previously mild regions as well, since scorching summer months, coupled with persistent drought, demonstrate what happens when water scarcity looms. Recent bush fires have been catastrophic, but water crisis in its full complexity will be the real issue to deal with in the coming years.

“Snippets of interviews with the farmers, alongside still images of the land and the people living on it, creates an overwhelming sense of connection to a crisis that will eventually touch everyone of us.”
